Majority of respondents would use their mobiles to buy big-ticket items

Netsize, the leading mobile commerce and communications enabler, today released “Unlocking the Value of Mobile Commerce”, a report that examines the role of mobile in (online and physical) retail and commerce.

The free report includes exclusive research on the value amounts that people are ready for and willing to pay through their mobile phone for pricey items that go beyond the usual mix of transport tickets and parking tokens.

The report contains data from a Netsize survey of 1,000+ mobile professionals and practitioners and concludes that mobile payment is poised to super-charge shopping as users show a significant interest in buying digital and physical goods and services with their mobile phone.

Key findings:

While almost all respondents (94 percent) said they would be “very likely” or “somewhat likely” to purchase goods totaling up to €25.00 using their mobile phones, 83 percent of respondent indicated that they would be open to pay for items such as concert tickets (valued at amounts up to €50.00) with their mobile phones.

Additionally, over half (51 percent) of respondents reported they would be likely to purchase physical goods for amounts up to €100.00 with their mobile phones. This figure confirms the huge growth potential for mobile commerce and increased interest in new ways to shop and buy.

Payment mechanisms are critical to the quality of the mobile shopping experience. In fact, respondents stressed they value the freedom to choose the method they prefer. Specifically, most (60 percent) respondents report that payment choice is important to them.

Mobile commerce is poised to reach new heights provided the industry addresses a number of key issues. Clearly, companies and merchants are called on to provide a choice of payment methods. However, all companies across the emerging mobile commerce ecosystem must work together to remove the regulatory barriers that make mobile commerce a challenge.

Netsize, Payforit Accredited Payment Intermediary in the United Kingdom offers merchants a full implementation of the Payforit version 3 payment scheme; Netsize mPayment enables Payforit on Web, WAP and Web Lite transactions.

Paris, July 19, 2010 — Netsize, the leading mobile commerce and communications enabler, today announced the key to unlocking micropayments online: Netsize mPayment with Payforit version 3.

Click image to view mPayment with Payforit v3 product details

For the first time UK consumers will have a simple, straightforward and trustworthy route to buy digital as well as physical goods and services. Consumers can make transactions online and via WAP using any mobile phone. Merchants benefit via a simplified route to market that accelerates ARPU.

Payforit v3 offers trust, convenience and ease of use. It is supported by all mobile network operators in the UK. Payforit enables consumers to make online purchases from their PC or mobile phone and securely charge the payment amounts to their phone bill. Payforit v3 supports payments from all mobile devices, including WiFi-connected phones.

Netsize mPayment enables Payforit on Web, WAP and Web Lite transactions and also supports single click purchases and subscription services billing with Payforit.

“Netsize mPayment with Payforit v3 provides merchants with a ‘country on a plate’”, says Stanislas Chesnais, Chief Executive Offer, Netsize. “Now merchants can easily start with mobile payments in the UK and focus on promoting their offer, while mPayment with Payforit handles the technical complexities and helps ensure regulatory compliance.”

mPayment with Payforit offers merchants increased pricing flexibility. The easy check-out process significantly improves the rate of successful transactions. The number of clicks and keystrokes needed to make a payment is reduced by more than 50 percent compared to credit cards.

As SMS payment for web based transactions is now not allowed in the UK cross-network, Payforit v3 is the single mobile payment alternative available to merchants, offering a superior user experience.

“For the first time, merchants can take advantage of a mobile payment product in the UK that is secure, easy to use and offers payout rates similar to cards. mPayment with Payforit v3 enables them to do business online with consumers who have no credit card, debit card or PayPal account,” Stanislas Chesnais adds. “Payforit v3 has the potential to expand the UK market. It marks an important step towards an m-commerce economy.”

Fact-Packed Netsize Guide 2010 Debuts at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona; Includes Mobile Industry Mega-Trends, Expanded Country Data and Exclusive Interviews with 28 Senior Executives

9th Edition of the Netsize almanac provides unique and candid report on how the industry currently views market issues, business opportunities and mobile’s winners and losers

Netsize, the leading mobile communications and commerce enabler, today launches the Netsize Guide 2010, the comprehensive annual almanac that uniquely combines analysis of key developments that top the mobile industry agenda in 2010 with a wealth of statistical data on the global mobile services and content markets.

The Netsize Guide 2010, aptly titled Mobile Renaissance, examines the role of mobile as the catalyst for change and improvement in society, enabling innovation across all industry sectors and countries.

“The advance of new devices such as touch screen mobile phones, new services such as mobile healthcare, and new business models such as applications stores are significant developments that together yield an exponential increase in ideas and innovation,” says Stanislas Chesnais, Chief Executive Officer, Netsize. “We are indeed on the edge of a modern-day Renaissance, which is why this year’s Netsize Guide takes its name from this remarkable period. Mobile is not about technology; it’s about the means to collaborate, communicate, and connect with diverse networks of people, breaking down the walls between cultures and bringing together the physical and virtual worlds.”

Exclusive interviews with 28 industry senior executives at leading companies and organizations including Havas, Marks & Spencer, Mobile Marketing Association, Nokia, Paypal and Sony provide unique perspectives on these themes and reveal how players across the mobile ecosystem are preparing to meet the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities ahead.

The Netsize Guide 2010 also includes the results of Mobile Trends Survey 2010. Netsize asked over 1,000 mobile professionals and practitioners from 67 countries for their views on 5 key themes, including the advance of mobile applications stores, mobile social networking, customer-brand relationships through mobile, progress towards global mobile commerce and the increasing importance of mobile across a range of business verticals.

The Netsize Guide 2010 presents detailed data on the wireless telecommunications sector in 41 countries, covering revenues, market shares and value added service offerings for messaging and billing of 194 mobile network operators.

The launch of the Netsize Guide 2010 also introduces its online companion, www.mobile-renaissance.com. This blog will feature further interviews, findings and market data updates throughout the year.

The Netsize Guide 2010 is available from www.netsize.com, and Netsize Guide partners globally including American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA), Association for Interactive Media & Entertainment (AIME), Comunic@tii Mobile, Direct Marketing Association India, Mobile Data Association (MDA), Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF), Mobile Zeitgeist, MSearchGroove, and Services Mobiles. The Netsize Guide 2010 will be available for Amazon Kindle and EPUB format e-book readers in March.

FACTS & FIGURES FROM THE NETSIZE GUIDE 2010

Selected highlights from the Mobile Trends Survey:

Activation: 87 percent of respondents indicate that the Apple App Store will be most successful, followed by Google’s Android Market (60 percent), Nokia’s Ovi Store (30 percent) and RIM’s BlackBerry App World (27 percent). Surprisingly, applications stores run by mobile operators finished low in the list.

Interaction: Despite the rising popularity of application stores, side-loading and content-forwarding remains the most important distribution channel for mobile entertainment content, ranked first by 84 percent of respondents.

Conversation: Mobile is not a stand-alone technology. 92 percent of respondents felt it is most effective when combined with online media – which includes Web, email and social media — as part of a cross-media message; a significant number of respondents said they also see huge growth opportunities for communications that combine mobile and direct mailing via email.

Transaction: For 73 percent of respondents search, good navigation and targeted offers lead the list of requirements for a good shopping experience on mobile; 60 percent said a choice of payment methods and the ability to have purchases charged to their phone bill is also central.

Transformation: 2010 will see the take-off of permission-based mobile commerce. 71 percent of respondents expect these purchases will be triggered by location-aware marketing, while 57 percent believe mobile coupons and campaigns involving 2D barcodes will generate sales.

Selected highlights from the Country Data:

Developing countries have fastest growing subscriber base: India (45.3%, from 2008 to 2009), followed by Morocco (30.6%), Malaysia (17.9%), and the other BRIC countries (Brazil, China and Russia).

Greece is the country with highest mobile phone penetration (170%), and India has lowest penetration (37.5%). For the 41 countries surveyed, the average penetration rate increased from 62.8% in 2008 to 68.9% in 2009, on a total population of 2.66 billion.

China is forecasted to top USA in 2010 as largest mobile messaging market, with €11.45 billion and €10.5 billion revenues respectively. USA is the winner on mobile internet revenues with a whopping €14.9 billion forecasted revenues, against €11.7 billion in Japan and €4 billion in China.

Mobile network operators and wireless carriers speed time-to-market with Netsize Direct Billing to catch the mobile commerce wave

Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, February 15, 2010
Netsize, the leading communications and commerce enabler, today launch Netsize Direct Billing, the unique managed Direct Billing solution for Mobile Network Operators.

Direct Billing is a billing method that charges mobile payment amounts directly to the end user’s mobile phone subscription. It does not require intermediate WAP pages or premium SMS.

Netsize Direct Billing provides mobile operators with a direct billing solution that integrates seamlessly with their billing platform. It is provided as a fully managed service that minimizes the mobile operator’s time and resources that would be required to deploy a direct billing offer. In addition Netsize provide a direct billing API that enables third parties to launch mobile commerce services.

“As a relatively new billing method, Direct Billing delivers operators tremendous benefits for launching mobile commerce services, including ticketing and money transfer,” says Stanislas Chesnais, Chief Executive Officer, Netsize. “We estimate that operators would need a year to launch an in-house developed direct billing offer. Netsize Direct Billing shortens their time-to-market significantly to a few weeks, enabling the operator to catch the mobile commerce wave now.”

“Netsize Direct Billing is the first offer that springs from the Gemalto investment in Netsize,” says Jean-François Schreiber, Senior Vice President, Telecom Solutions and Services, Gemalto. “Gemalto’s worldwide presence enables Netsize to venture into new regions and provide operator groups with a common global platform.”

Netsize provide operator direct billing solutions to most of the large mobile device vendors for their application stores. Netsize is global leader for third party direct billing.

Netsize present Direct Billing at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Spain, 15-18 February 2010, at stand 2.G51 in Hall 2.

Netsize Survey of Professionals, Practitioners and Execs Identifies Mobile Trends and Industry Leaders Netsize previews survey results at M-Days mobile conference and trade show in Munich, Germany

Netsize, a leading mobile commerce and communications enabler, today revealed the first results of the Mobile Trends Survey 2010. Drawing from an online survey of 1,000+ professionals and practitioners, the survey provides insights into key trends that top the industry agenda, including the advance of mobile applications stores, progress towards global mobile commerce and the pivotal importance of mobile as a means to bridge our virtual and physical worlds.

Using the occasion of M-Days – one of Europe’s biggest mobile industry events and exhibitions held in Munich, Germany – Netsize provided conference attendees, industry influencers and key bloggers a sneak peek into the controversial survey results, starting with respondents’ views on app store leaders and the enablers that give them and their offers the competitive edge.

According to the survey, the vast majority (87 percent) of respondents believe the Apple App Store will be the most successful app store in the mobile space. Google’s Android Market is a distant second (60 percent), followed by Nokia’s Ovi Store (30 percent) and RIM’s BlackBerry App World (27 percent). Surprisingly, applications stores run by mobile operators finished low in the list, indicating that platform providers and handset makers may well dominate the space for a time to come.

When asked to rate the unique selling proposition of application stores over other software distribution and sales channels, 65 percent of respondents put convenience (“everything in one place”) at the top of the list. This was followed by compatibility “software applications specific to the device”), choice (“a long tail of thousands of applications to choose from”), and ease of payment (“operator billing, for example”).

Netsize, provider of operator billing solutions to most of the large mobile device vendors for their application stores, released the application store survey findings to the stage for a lively discussion of the future of mobile and the role of software application stores during “Mobile Trends 2020, Mobile Research and App-Commerce: What Comes Next in Europe?” The M-Days session was led and moderated by Peggy Anne Salz, mobile thought leader and MSearchGroove Founder and Chief Analyst.

The complete mobile trends survey results – which cover topics related to mobile entertainment, mobile marketing, mobile commerce, mobile payments and mobile convergence – will be released as part of the Netsize Guide 2010, a comprehensive mobile industry analysis and almanac published by Netsize and written by MSearchGroove’s Salz. Netsize will launch the Netsize Guide 2010 on February 16, 2010 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 – GTO), the world leader in digital security, today confirmed that it has subscribed to a capital increase in Netsize, with an option to potentially acquire the company outright at a later date. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Netsize offers mobile payment solutions based on operator billing (through premium SMS, MMS and WAP for example) for 100 mobile operators in 28 countries, reaching over 1 billion billable subscribers worldwide, and provides mobile messaging, with SMS and MMS delivery to over 200 countries.

Netsize was founded in 1999 by Stanislas Chesnais, who will remain as CEO. Prior to this capital increase, Gemalto already held 24% of Netsize. Headquartered in Levallois Peret, near Paris, France, Netsize employs approximately 180 people. Netsize will continue to operate as a stand-alone company within the Gemalto Group.

Olivier Piou, Chief Executive Officer of Gemalto, stated: “Gemalto invested in Netsize back in 2001 and was the first and largest outside investor in Netsize. It is natural extension of our long term relationship that Gemalto now becomes Netsize’s majority shareholder. Netsize’s mobile payment platform complements our rapidly expanding mobile software and services offering.”

“Netsize has been a pioneer in mobilizing business and commerce” commented Philippe Vallée, Executive Vice President for Telecom at Gemalto. “Netsize’s “one click” mobile payment solution is a key brick in enabling the monetization of mobile phone downloads and app-stores”.

Stanislas Chesnais, Founder and CEO of Netsize, added “Gemalto’s investment will facilitate our expansion into new markets such Latin America, Africa and South East Asia. We look forward to leveraging Gemalto’s digital security technology to make mobile payments even more pervasive and convenient”.

Netsize mPayment offers subscription services billing with MTS in Russia

Netsize, a leading mobile commerce and communications enabler, today announces that it has extended the network coverage of Netsize mPayment, its solution for global remote payments, with three mobile network operators in South Africa, Vodacom, MTN, and soon, Cell-C.

The expansion follows the acquisition by Netsize of Africa2you’s assets, a wireless services provider based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

“South Africa is at the forefront of mobile, having one of the highest growth rates for mobile content services,” says Stanislas Chesnais, Chairman and CEO, Netsize. “With Netsize mPayment, content providers can use operator-based billing for charging pay-per-use and subscription services.”

In addition, Netsize announces the availability of subscription services billing with Netsize mPayment on the network of MTS, the largest mobile network operator in Russia with close to 66 million subscribers.

Netsize mPayment enables clients to define alias, end user price point, billing frequency, retry scheme and expiry date. End users confirm their subscription service opt-in by sending an SMS MO message. Opt-in through WAP or PIN-code authenticated web request will be available in the first quarter of 2010.

The new services will be presented in a live online seminar on November 26, 2009.

Netsize, the leading mobile commerce and communications enabler, today published its latest market report, “Netsize Mobile Marketing Survey 2009: Can companies and brands rise to challenge and cash in on the mobile marketing opportunity?”. Drawing from an online survey of 221+ professionals and practitioners, the report identifies the chief drivers and obstacles impacting mobile marketing growth. It also highlights the exciting business opportunities ahead for companies and brands that use the current economic climate to rethink marketing strategies and ramp up activities.

International survey reveals companies and brands bullish on mobile marketing benefits, but lack skills set to execute campaigns

Strong growth ahead for SMS and MMS messaging, positive outlook for branded apps and mobile websites

High interest in targeting consumers, high concerns that opt-in databases won’t deliver

Among the key findings:

Mobile is part of the mix to attract and keep customers: The vast majority of respondents (56%) currently use mobile to acquire new customers. But that will change as respondents follow through on their plans to boost customer retention and loyalty through mobile marketing (64%), streamline transactions (37%) and enable commerce and sales using a mobile device (37%).

Messaging is essential: Usage of MMS is poised for significant growth, with with 22% of respondents revealing plans to double deployment in the next six months. The use of SMS messaging is also on the rise, but will move from a one-way message to a two-way conversation.

Marked interest in more innovative formats: Respondents reported use of branded content will increase from 29% to 35%, use of branded apps will rise from 23% to 35%. Finally, use of mobile coupons and QR codes will jump from 20% to 31%.

Mobile marketing is teamwork: The vast majority of respondents (47%) outsource to providers that can meet their requirements for a fully-managed marketing solution. Campaign execution services was the most sought-after skill (57%), followed by measurement, analytics and reporting (54%), technical services and integration (52%), and mobile campaign management (52%).

Quality of opt-in campaign databases is a main concern: One-third of respondents (32%) expressed concern over the quality of the customer mobile phone numbers stored in their opt-in databases.

“Market adoption of mobile marketing is accelerating. The survey results and analysis show companies and brands recognize the business benefits associated with mobile marketing and are serious about integrating mobile in their strategies,” says Stanislas Chesnais, Chairman and CEO, Netsize. “Respondents told us they are increasing use of messaging to engage in conversations with consumers on their mobile phone, and stepping up efforts to harness other exciting formats and approaches such as WAP sites, mobile websites and branded content. This momentum can only grow as the economy picks up steam.”

ABOUT THE REPORT

“Netsize Mobile Marketing Survey 2009: Can companies and brands rise to challenge and cash in on the mobile marketing opportunity?” is available from www.netsize.com.
The survey was conducted by Netsize to determine the role and usage of mobile marketing and the perceived business benefits. In total 221 respondents from four regions (Europe, Americas, Asia Pacific/Australia and Africa/Middle East) participated in this online survey for the period from September 15, 2009 through October 1, 2009.

The survey aims to uncover the extent to which mobile marketing has become a mature instrument in the marketing mix. Researched topics include strategic drivers, tactics, resources, opt-in data and short term plans for deployment.

The survey follows the one that Netsize conducted end of 2008 in collaboration with Informa Telecoms & Media as part of the Netsize Guide 2009. The study found that the number of companies that spend over 5% of their digital budget on mobile was expected to increase from 30% to 49% by 2010, a growth of 63%.

“The results very clearly suggested that mobile marketing is bound to become main stream,” says Stanislas Chesnais, Chairman and CEO, Netsize. “This year’s survey provides a reality check: how are companies moving ahead with mobile marketing in the current economic frame, and what did they do to enable successful campaigns.”

The Netsize mobile marketing survey report will be published begin October. A summary of the report is available free of charge to all participants.
